how to read this — twelve words the day leans on
2s10s
the ten-year yield minus the two-year. Above zero the curve slopes up, its usual shape; below zero it is inverted, which has come before most recessions.
term premium
the extra yield a lender asks for holding a long bond instead of rolling short ones. It rises when the far future looks less certain.
carry trade
borrowing where money is cheap to lend where it pays more. It unwinds fast when the cheap side gets dearer.
the 200-day
the average close of the last two hundred trading days. Above it the trend is up by that measure; below it, down.
Brier
how far a probability sat from what happened, squared: 0 is perfect, .25 is a coin toss. Lower is better.
credible interval
the range the true hit rate most likely sits in, given how few times it has been tried. Wide means little is known yet.
p
the probability the desk puts on its own lean, from .50 (a coin) to 1.00 (certain). It is scored later, not asserted.
backed / refuted / thin
what history said about a claim: backed when the past mostly went that way, refuted when it mostly did not, thin when there is too little to say.
the lean
the one direction the day settles on, with a probability, and the date it is judged on. A read of the tape, not a position.
the trigger
the one close, or dated print, that would turn the lean over. Named in advance so it can be scored like any other call.
revision
a later look at the same day. It adds below or edits one passage; the earlier words stay one fold down.
the thread
where yesterday's lean stands today, in the desk's own words: held, hardened, or turned.

what changed

The dollar index closed at 98.856, down 0.31% on a day when both the US and Canadian markets were shut for holiday. The move was the most unusual on the board — 1.0× the dollar's own normal day — but that says more about the stillness of everything else. Gold rose 1.06% to $4,477, the only other asset to register even a modest pulse. JGB 10-year yields fell 1.89% on the session, but that was a Friday close finally catching up to a Monday print, not a live move. Equities were flat. Oil was flat. Bitcoin was up 0.64% and ether 1.38%, both within their ordinary ranges.

why it matters · case and countercase

the case

The dollar closed at 98.856, its lowest since early August and below the 99.00 level that held it for the past two weeks. A holiday-thinned tape that still pushes the dollar lower is a tape that reveals the bias of the marginal trader. The last time the dollar index closed below 99.00 on a US holiday [AN1], the weeks that followed are the thing to measure. When a market is shut and the only participants trading are offshore, the price action reveals the bias of the marginal trader. A 0.31% drop with no US desks open means the rest of the world is selling dollars, not just waiting for New York to come back.

    Bank Holiday

the counter

A 0.31% move on a US bank holiday is noise dressed as a signal. The dollar index is still only 0.75% lower over the past month, and the 10-year Treasury yield at 4.77% is 14 basis points higher over the same stretch. Rising rates and a falling dollar cannot persist together for long. Every time the dollar has fallen over a 30-day window while the 10-year yield rose more than 10 basis points [AN2], the dollar's direction from there is the thing to check. Rate differentials are the dollar's measurement. If the 10-year keeps climbing into CPI on the 11th, the dollar will find a bid. A holiday drift with no US desks to arbitrage the gap tells you nothing about where the real money sits.

evidence and historical context

CH1dollar index against 10-year yield, Labor Day to CPI week

The chart shows the dollar index (right axis) falling from 101 on July 1 to 98.856 on September 7. Over the same window, the 10-year yield (left axis) climbed from 4.480 to 4.770. The 99.00 level, once a floor for the dollar, was broken during this stretch. No box or line rules triggered against this data.

what the picture is drawn from — every close, stretch and line, in words
  • dxy: 101 on 2026-07-01 → 98.856 on 2026-09-07
  • us10y: 4.480 on 2026-07-01 → 4.770 on 2026-09-03
  • level dxy at 99.000 — August floor
  • level us10y at 4.770 — current 10y

The first parallel, measuring what happened after the dollar closed below 99 on a US holiday, turned up only 17 matches in our history, and the forward returns were too thin to call a direction either way [AN1]. The second, measuring the dollar when it had fallen over 30 days while the 10-year rose more than 10 basis points, found 50 matches but still could not resolve a clear directional bias — 27 of 50 were higher a month later, a near-even split [AN2]. Neither check supports the case built on it, and neither refutes it outright. What's left is a holiday-thinned tape with no historical edge.

what to watch

The ECB rate decision and U.S. CPI later this week are the next hurdles. A hawkish hold from the ECB on September 10 could strengthen the euro and push the dollar lower still. But a core CPI print above 0.3% on September 11 would challenge the entire disinflation narrative and put the dollar's decline on hold. A close back above 99.00 in the dollar index would break the current pattern and call the down case into question.

the thread and the ledger

the thread — where the call before this one stands

Into today, the machine's call was on the 10-year yield up at 0.51. The 10-year yield closed at 4.77% on September 3 and has not printed a new close since — today's thin holiday session passed with no Treasury trading. That call stands untouched. Nothing in the data today moved the rate, and the CPI print on September 11 remains the next real test.
